What an ATS actually does with your resume
Most advice about applicant tracking systems describes a robot that rejects resumes. The real thing is less dramatic and easier to pass.
It parses your file to plain text
The first thing an applicant tracking system does with a resume is strip the layout and read the words. Anything the parser cannot read in order, it drops or scrambles.
It maps fields and matches keywords
The parsed text is sorted into fields: name, contact, each job with its title and dates, education, skills. Recruiters then search and filter those fields by the terms from the posting.
It does not auto-reject on a score
An ATS is a database with search on top, not a judge. Resumes rarely get rejected by a number; they get missed because the right words were not there or the parser could not find them.
Five formatting choices that break parsing
Almost every parse failure comes from one of these. Each one is a template feature, not a content problem, so the fix is quick.
- 1
Columns and tables
A parser reads left to right across the page, so two columns interleave into nonsense and table cells lose their order.
- 2
Text boxes
Text inside a drawn box often lives outside the main text flow and is skipped entirely.
- 3
Headers and footers
Many parsers ignore the page header and footer, which is where templates like to put the contact block.
- 4
Images used for text
A logo, an icon or a name rendered as a picture carries no text to read. The parser sees a blank.
- 5
Non-standard headings
Field mapping keys off expected headings. "Where I have worked" does not map to Experience; "Experience" does.
The safe shape is a single column, standard headings, consistent dates, and a text-based PDF. Check my resume now →
What the checker tests
Here is what the ATS check returns. It reviews the resume the way a recruiter's search would see it; it does not run an employer's parser.
ATS score
A 0 to 100 estimate of how ATS-friendly the resume is, on the same scale for every resume so you can compare versions.
Keywords found and missing
The strong keywords your resume already uses and the important ones it lacks. Paste the job description to check against that posting.
Keyword density
A short note on how densely and naturally those keywords appear across the resume.
Job title match
How closely the resume reads as your target role, as a percentage, with the alternative roles it matches.
Formatting
Pass or fix checks on font consistency, whitespace and margins, the layout signals that make a page hard to read.
Line-by-line fixes
Each issue comes with the rewritten wording, including keyword and formatting edits, ready to copy into your resume.
ATS score versus resume score
The ATS score is one part of the full resume score. It estimates how ATS-friendly the resume is and whether the posting's keywords are present. The resume score adds content strength, focus and proof on top. A resume can parse perfectly and still score low because its bullets say nothing, and the reverse is just as common.
If you want the whole picture, the free AI resume review returns both, with a skills benchmark and rewrites. For how the ATS number is built, read the ATS score guide, and for how free checkers compare, the free ATS score checker guide.
ATS checker FAQ
Is the ATS resume checker free?
Yes. Upload your resume PDF and get the ATS check with no account, no credit card and no email. The ATS check is part of the full free review, so you also get a content score, a skills benchmark and the rewritten wording for every issue found.
Does it simulate a specific ATS like Workday or Greenhouse?
No. The tool does not reproduce an employer ATS or test its parser. It reviews your resume against the keywords and formatting habits those systems reward and returns an ATS score with the fixes. Results are model estimates, so treat the score as a guide to revision.
What file type should I upload?
A text-based PDF. A scanned or image-only PDF carries its words as a picture, which most applicant tracking systems cannot read, so export from your editor rather than scanning a printout.
Do I need the job description?
No, but it makes the check more useful. Without it the keywords are compared with strong resumes for your detected role. Paste the posting or its URL and the found and missing keywords come from that job instead.
Is 80 a pass?
An 80 on our ATS compatibility scale is a useful diagnostic signal, not an 80% chance of passing an employer system. ATS products and employer settings differ. Review the missing keywords and formatting feedback against the actual job description rather than chasing a universal pass score.
Is my resume data private?
Yes. Your resume is encrypted in transit and at rest, is never sold or shared with employers, and is not used to train AI models. Checks run without an account, and you can delete your account and its data at any time.
Can it fix the issues it finds?
It shows the corrected wording for every issue it finds, free to copy into your resume. Create a free account to pick the ones you want, and Resume Boost writes them in for you on Pro. Layout problems such as columns and text boxes are fixed in your own editor.
Find out before the parser does
It takes under 15 seconds, and you'll know exactly what to change.
